Impact Ranking 2020: 7th Place for Anna University in Water Research

Times Higher Education recently released the world’s most influential Impact Ranking 2020. It was launched in 2019 to measure the broader impact of universities. Universities are assessed against each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted by the UN in 2016 to provide an outline for developing the world in a sustainable way.

This year, Anna University has added one more feather in its cap by ranking 7th under water and sustainable category in the recent Impact Rankings 2020. In addition to it, Anna University has also ranked between 400-601 in overall category.

It is important to mention that the rankings are based on several parameters like research related to water consumption per person, reuse and commitment to provide good management in the wider community.

Anna University earned 70.1 points and grabbed the 7th position through its vast research in groundwater, surface water, sanitation and treating sewage.

M K Surappa, Vice-Chancellor at Anna University stated that they underwent several researches and developed new technologies to convert waste water into potable one. He also added that they are partnering with many companies and public sectors for more researches and assured that Anna University will get listed within top 200 next year.

L Elango, Professor, Department of Geology at Anna University, one of the leading researchers in groundwater-related subjects, concludes by complementing the faculty members for the substantial studies they went through with the assistance of ISRO and other agencies.

Other notable universities listed in Impact Ranking 2020:
  • IIT Kharagpur ranked 6th in the zero hunger category with 86.7 points
  • IIT Kharagpur was the only Indian institute listed in the top 100 in overall category, ranking 57th
  • Under water and sustainable category, IIT Kharagpur ranked 4th with 73.6 points and IIT Madras ranked 32nd with 62.5 points
  • IIT Madras gained the highest points 97.6 and ranked 16th under research in industry, innovation and infrastructure category
  • In the overall category, IIT-M was ranked 301-400
